A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

Piazza Venezia was the stage for the two grand events in Rome today, one this morning at the Altare della Patria for the Festa della Liberazione di Roma and one this evening at the Basilica di San Marco for the saint's feast day. It seems appropriate that both events were linked to this piazza itself, the main stage of modern Rome. Both St. Mark, as secretary to St. Peter, and the allied liberation of Rome, changed the course of history for this city.

The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ Jesus will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little.

Sanctoral: Mark, patron of Venice and much else. "...he became the companion and secretary of St. Peter in Rome about the year 42 A.D.. He wrote his Gospel about the year 50 A.D. His Gospel is a record of St. Peter's preaching about Our Lord and pays special attention to the head of the Apostles, and emphasizes the miraculous powers of the Savior. The Gospel was written for Roman Gentile converts."

Ancient Rome- Robigalia was celebrated a festival in honor of the deities Robigo and Robigus. According to tradition, the festival was established by Numila Pompilius. Robigo was a deity responsible for securing crops against so-called grain rust, which destroyed huge amounts of fields. During the Robigalia, the procession went to the sacred grove, where flamen Quirinalis offered a sacrifice of a red-haired dog and a sheep, which was supposed to save the crops. Then races were organized (ludi cursoribus) in honor of Mars and Robigo. There were two types of races: the younger participants ran two-horse chariots (biga) and those more experienced sat in a four-horse (quadriga).

Quote: "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come."

- Mark 13:32-33
