A Carpe Diem Snapshot:
This glorious rising sun burned off the thick pre-dawn fog, bringing with it a perfectly pleasant Spring day- not too warm, not too chilly. As I knew another day of being chained to the computer lay before me, I made sure to at least pop my head out the door and gaze with naked eyes at the brightest part of the sky for a few minutes (and to capture this Carpe Diem image for the daily posting!).
Liturgical: Friday within the Octave of Easter So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord,
he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea.
Sanctoral: Vincent Ferrer, Spain and Britany +1419 "Angel of the Judgment"; Juliana of Cornillon, Belgium +1258 Mystic and Promoter of the Feast of Corpus Christ
Human: 1722- Easter Island (Paaseiland in Dutch) with its gigantic rock sculptures of heads is discovered on Easter Sunday by the Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen. The statues remain a bit of a mystery!; Video round-up of history of this day
Natural: Interesting creatures that used to live on Easter Island: a small, long-legged chicken reported to have laid blue eggs (but later interbred with European varieties), as well as the aboriginal edible Polynesian rat (subsequently replaced by larger European species).
Quote: "Men seek retreats for themselves, houses in the country, seashores, and mountains; and thou too art wont to desire such things very much. But this is altogether a mark of the most common sort of men, for it is in thy power whenever thou shalt choose to retire into thyself. For nowhere either with more quiet or more freedom from trouble does a man retire than into his own soul, particularly when he has within him such thoughts that by looking into them he is immediately in perfect tranquility; and I affirm that tranquility is nothing else than the good ordering of the mind. Constantly then give to thyself this retreat, and renew thyself; and let thy principles be brief and fundamental, which, as soon as thou shalt recur to them, will be sufficient to cleanse the soul completely, and to send thee back free from all discontent with the things to which thou returnest."
-Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, “Book IV”. (from c. 180 CE)
