A Carpe Diem Snapshot:
Next to St. Peter's Basilica is the Italian shrine of Divine Mercy, which contains relics of Sts. Faustina and John Paul II, as well as a replica of the original Divine Mercy image. It was, unsurprisingly, packed with international pilgrims all day today for the feast, but most especially at 3 pm for the recitation of the Divine Mercy chaplet, followed by the Polish Mass, pictured above. Whenever I'm in Rome on the feast day I try to attend it, and enjoy witnessing the depth and fervor that continues to be evident among the Polish people, especially in this place where their two countrymen who changed the history of the Church are venerated.
Liturgical: Divine Mercy Sunday The Divine Mercy Sunday origin is from a revelation to Saint Faustina, a Sister of Mercy in Poland who initiated the Divine Mercy devotion. Between 1930 and 1938 Jesus requested numerous times a Feast of Divine Mercy. On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of Saint Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.
Second Sunday of Easter:"Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.
