Calendar Class of August 1, 2024

A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

Did you know that August is "Family Fun Month"? And a whole lot of other things. Probably this month was set aside to remind us to have a little bit of fun and relaxation with family because it is the final month of summer, before Fall brings stricter daily schedules with school. One way we've decided to slow down and savor what's left of summer is by taking a daily sunset stroll. While I haven't managed to get my night owls up to enjoy a sunrise stroll with me yet, last night's outing was short and pleasant enough to convince them that it's worth the effort. If you need any more encouragement, here are the scientific reasons why taking a stroll at these times of day are really good for your health- body, mind, and spirit.

Memorial of St. Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Rise up, be off to the potter’s house; there I will give you my message. I went down to the potter’s house and there he was, working at the wheel. Whenever the object of clay which he was making turned out badly in his hand, he tried again, making of the clay another object of whatever sort he pleased.

Bishop Barron's Gospel reflections today.

Sanctoral: Today is the Memorial of St. Alphonsus de Liguori (1696-1787). Alphonsus was a great preacher of the Gospel to the poor. His charity and apostolic spirit led him to found the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer to carry on this work. He sent his Redemptorists, as our Lord did the Apostles, into the countryside and the market towns and villages, to announce the Kingdom of God. He became Bishop of Sant' Agata dei Goti, near Naples, and died at the age of ninety, in 1787. For his great works on Moral Theology he has been declared a Doctor of the Church.

Human: All about the month of August!

Natural: August 1, traditionally known as Lammas Day, was an old festival to mark the annual wheat and corn harvest. It was a sort of Thanksgiving (harvest time) in Britain. Lammas also marked the mid-point between the summer solstice and autumn equinox. Learn more about Lammas Day and cross-quarter days here.

Italian: Agosto (August)

Quote: “Purity of intention is called the heavenly alchemy by which iron is turned into gold; that is to say, the most trivial actions (such as to work, to take one’s meals, to take recreation or repose), when done for God, become the gold of holy Iove.” -St. Alphonsus Liguori
