A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

Though each of my family members surpasses me with their cooking skills, perhaps even Cordelia, today I bequeathed them at least one recipe I can claim as my own-- apple baklava bites. Featured in the book I wrote on honey a few years ago, this recipe is much simpler and not so sickly sweet as traditional baklava recipes. My oldest daughter Maya even praised it, and this is coming from a girl who has sworn off baklava for most of her life after I used it as a substitute for marshmallow in the famous "marshmallow test" to determine a child's ability to delay gratification. Apparently, she was so determined to pass the test that she psychologically convinced herself that baklava tastes terrible and has had an aversion to it ever since! Today, my recipe turned the tide.

Well done, my good and faithful servant.

Since you were faithful in small matters,

I will give you great responsibilities.

Come, share your master's joy!

Bishop Barron's reflections today.

Sanctoral: Today is the Optional Memorial of St. Stephen of Hungary (969-1038). Vaik, son of Geza, Duke of Hungary, was baptized about 985 by St. Adalbert of Prague who gave him the name of Stephen. He was chosen by God to bring his people to the Christian faith. With the assistance of monks from Burgundy, he established bishoprics, founded several monasteries and re-organized the whole life of the country. Pope Silvester II offered him the privilege of being crowned king and the ceremony took place on December 25, 1000. His great zeal for the spread of the Catholic faith earned him the title of apostolic king and apostle of Hungary. He died on August 15, 1038, the feast of the Assumption of our Lady, to whom he had consecrated his kingdom.

1858 Britain's Queen Victoria telegraphs US President James Buchanan for the first time via transatlantic telegraph cable; he replies, "It is a triumph more glorious, because far more useful to mankind, than was ever won by conqueror on the field of battle".

A new transatlantic cable, Google's "Grace Hopper" is currently being laid between New York and Bilboa, Spain.
