Calendar Class of August 7, 2024

A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

I walked into Remus Resale to check out the 50% off clothing sale, and walked out with priceless treasures--six new books. The top one in particular was a real find- Bringing the Farmhouse Home, by Michigan author Gloria Whelan (my Dad was a fan). I read it to Cordelia early in the morning (today she decided to become a Morning Lark and rose before the dawn!), then again to Valentina and her friend over breakfast, then placed it near my friend's side at lunch because she now lives in her parents' farmhouse and knows a thing or two about the value of old family keepsakes. If you have ever lived in the country in a farmhouse, or an ancestral home, reading this will bring up some sentimental memories. The illustrator, Jada Rowland, was new to me and is already one of my favorites; Her pictures are warm, full of life, humor, soft colors, and personality, much like America's favorite illustrator, Norman Rockwell.

You who fear the Lord, love him and your hearts will be enlightened. Study the generations long past and understand; has anyone hoped in the LORD and been disappointed? Has anyone persevered in his commandments and been forsaken? Has anyone called upon him and been rebuffed? Compassionate and merciful is the LORD; he forgives sins, he saves in time of trouble and he is a protector to all who seek him in truth.

Bishop Barron's Gospel reflections today.

Sanctoral: St. Cajetan (1480-1547). Cajetan, with the future Pope Paul IV, founded the first congregation of Clerks Regular, a new form of institute which corresponded with the needs of the time. Trust in God was its principal rule; its members were forbidden to ask for alms and depended entirely on the spontaneous charity of the faithful. Such was Cajetan's zeal in seeking the salvation of souls that he came to be called "the hunter of souls." He died at Naples on August 7, 1547.

Human: Birthday of Garrison Keillor (radio host) – 1942. His show, The Writer's Almanac, was one of the sources of inspiration for Calendar Class!
