Calendar Class of February 22, 2024

Today's Carpe Diem Snapshot:

After a long morning out with Valentina for Art and Architecture class (media on IG), I took my weary child back to the villa by bus and accidentally exited through the train station. It was a happy accident in my opinion (not Valentina's!) because we discovered the entrance to the Russian Orthodox church for the first time! The steeple of this lovely and rare-for-Rome church is visible from our villa and I look upon it every day but have never had the opportunity to find the somewhat hidden entrance to it until today, as it is accessible only through the underground passage of the train station! Unfortunately, the little homebody had had enough adventures for one day and so we had to turn back, but I shall Carpe Diem alone soon and explore it further.

"But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Christ, the son of the living God."

Sanctoral: Feast of the Chair of St. Peter in the Vatican. Coincidentally, today I took my class to the Basilica of Santa Francesca Romana al Foro Romano, where I noticed the chair of St. Peter depicted in the sculptural relief above the tomb of Pope Gregory XI, who brought the papacy back to Rome in 1377.

Human: 1512-Death of explorer Amerigo Vespucci; 1732- Birthday of George Washington; 1881-Ancient Egyptian obelisk (Cleopatra's needle) presented to New York City

Natural: Up-close observation of an unopened umbrella pine pinecone that looked like a paper wasp nest. The chance of getting hit in the head by a falling pinecone is 4.6 x 10 (-18).

Quote: "Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to that appellation." -George Washington
