A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

Today we chose to visit Emperor Constantine, or what's left of him, at the Capitoline Museums for Art and Architecture class. The collection, and the view, is intoxicating, as Gibbon describes in the quote of the day. Despite our best efforts, it was impossible to take everything in during our class hours and I'm already planning my next visit. Roma, non basta una vita!

Liturgical: 7th week of Ordinary Time Mass readings and Bishop Barron's reflections.

My child, when you come to serve the Lord, prepare yourself for testing. Set your heart right and be steadfast, and do not be impetuous in time of calamity. Cling to him and do not depart, so that your last days may be prosperous. Accept whatever befalls you, and in times of humiliation be patient. For gold is tested in the fire, and those found acceptable, in the furnace of humiliation. Trust in him, and he will help you; make your ways straight, and hope in him.

Sirach 2:1-11

Sanctoral: The Roman Martyrology commemorates St. Walburga (710-779), abbess, who, at the request of St. Boniface and her holy brothers Sts. Willibald and Winebald, left England to come to Germany to help establish the faith there. She established a double monastery of monks and nuns at Hiedenhem, where she was abbess. She died February 25, 779, and later her relics were translated to Eichstatt on May 1, 870.

Human: Roman History Today

50 AD – Roman emperor Claudius adopted Nero (he was given the name Nero Claudius Caesar Drusus Germanicus), who, as he was older than the biological son of the emperor, Britannicus, became his rightful heir to the throne. In addition, Claudius granted Nero’s mother, Agrippina the Younger, the title Augusta and give the status of a Roman colony to her hometown, Oppidum Ubiorum. From that time, the city was called Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium – today’s Cologne in Germany.

138 AD – Emperor Hadrian adopted his successor Antoninus Pius.

493 AD – Odoacer conquered Ravenna after a three-year siege and agreed to talk with Theodoric the Great, the king of the Ostrogoths.

Italian: Fare (to do / to make)

Quote: '"..at the distance of twenty-five years I can neither forget nor express the strong emotions which agitated my mind as I first approached and entered the Eternal City. After a sleepless night, I trod, with a lofty step the ruins of the Forum; each memorable spot where Romulus stood, or Tully spoke, or Caesar fell, was at once present to my eye; and several days of intoxication were lost or enjoyed before I could descend to a cool and minute investigation."
