Calendar Class of February 6, 2024

Today's Carpe Diem Snapshot: The Capitoline hill is one of my favorite locations of the Art and Architecture class as it is the epicenter of the Caput Mundi and has inspired giants who have walked these paths before us. In particular, I told the students today about the English historians Edward Gibbon and Christopher Dawson, who both rested upon the marble steps leading to the church of Santa Maria Aracoeli, more than a hundred years apart from one another, and dreamed up their great works- The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (Gibbon) and The Age of the Gods (Dawson).

Sanctoral: Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs. Nagasaki, Japan +1597

Human: 1952 Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne of the United Kingdom; 1911 Birthday of Ronald Reagan; 46 BC Julius Caesar's forces won the Battle of Thapsus in the civil war with Pompey. Cato then committed suicide rather than surrender.

Natural: Plane trees a source of urban allergies! Here are the other worst offenders.

Quote: "Peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means." -Ronald Reagan
