Calendar Class of February 8, 2024

Today's Carpe Diem Snapshot: Almost every afternoon, when I notice the sun sinking rapidly behind the umbrella pines, I gloomily tell myself that I've run out of time to see the sun set on a day that will never come again. Today, however, right after I had poured myself a cup of hot tea and was about to sit down to work, I decided to take my chances and chase the setting sun. In less than ten minutes I had climbed up the Janiculum hill, which brought me to a higher viewpoint and extended my precious time in the sun by about 30 minutes (in contrast to the villa's location farther down the hill). Today the sun set in Rome at 17:33, days are brighter, new flowers are in bloom each day, and birds are all a-chatter. I caught this silhouette snapshot of two seagulls perched on the highest seat in Rome, atop the statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi, soaking up the day's last rays.

Human: 1587- Mary, Queen of Scots, was executed on the orders of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England, following 19 years of confinement, after she was implicated in the Babington Plot.

Natural: Local time of sunset 17:33! New flowers blooming, an increase in bird song. The Roman Spring has arrived, just in time for Carnevale 2024!

Quote: "To be kind to all, to like many and to love a few, to be needed and wanted by those we love, is certainly the nearest we can come to happiness." -Mary, Queen of Scots
