A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

If I had to choose just one word to sum up our adventures yesterday it would be "inspiring". From an uplifting liturgy in the morning at the Basilica of St. Adalbert, to an outstanding brunch in the afternoon at San Chez Bistro, to a reunion of friends both old (Amanda's work here) and new (Danielle's work here) at a graduation party in the evening at the home of very good friends (Michael's work here). The lovely graduate, a dear friend of my oldest daughter, has made some admirable choices for her future-- she will first devote a year to NET ministries, and then head off to nursing school. From morning to night, it was a splendid Sunday, thanks to these inspiring souls.

Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni," which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, "Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and then reported what he told her.

Sanctoral: Today is the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene. On June 10, 2016, the liturgical celebration honoring St. Mary Magdalene was raised from a memorial to a feast, commemorating the “Apostle to the Apostles” with a liturgical feast, the same celebration as most of the apostles (except for Peter and Paul). Beginning in 2020 there is a new Preface: Apostle to the Apostles used for her feast.

Human: Birthday of Emma Lazarus, poet, 1849; Birthday of Rev. William Archibald Spooner-- the unfortunate inventor of "spoonerisms", 1844 (My husband loves to make his own spoonerisms with English words and think it is hilarious).

1099-- Godfrey of Bouillon is elected the first Defender of the Holy Sepulchre of The Kingdom of Jerusalem during the First Crusade; 1456-- Hungarian army under John Hunyadi defeat the forces of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II and end the Siege of Belgrade (Nándorfehérvár). Halting Ottoman expansion in Europe for 70 years; 1942-- 300,000 Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto are sent to Treblinka Extermination Camp; 2011-- Norway is the victim of twin terror attacks, a bomb blast targeting government buildings in central Oslo and a massacre at a youth camp on the island of Utøya

Natural: 504 sheep struck dead in their tracks by a single lightning bolt, Wasatch National Forest, Utah– 1918; Crew of Belgium RV Belgica see 1st sunrise in 1600 hrs - 1st expedition to endure Antarctic winter--1898

Italian: Barcarole-- A boating song sung by Venetian gondoliers.

Quote: "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

-from Emma Lazarus' poem "The New Colossus" inscribed on the Statue of Liberty
