Calendar Class of July 23, 2024

A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

When you are with a friend who really understands you, or at least is willing to try to understand you, time seems to pass differently, and there is never an end of important topics to discuss and meaningful stories to share. And that is why I find myself now, with only a few minutes left of July 23rd, finally writing today's Calendar Class post. I've just spent the whole day with one of these types of friends, Amanda, talking and exploring the town in which I was born, Big Rapids, while the girls attended pottery camp at Artworks. Seeing the city through her eyes was a real treat and gave me a reason to explore the city's beautiful river walk for the first time in my life. As those of you who already know Amanda will understand, it is also a beautiful thing to see life through her eyes. Today she lent me a powerful phrase and encouraged me to write about it-- "tracing the thread of Providence". To hear more about her mission, here is an interview she gave to my friends Jim and Ralph only yesterday, at my kitchen table.

I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.

Bishop Barron's Gospel reflections today.

Sanctoral: Today the Church celebrates the Optional Memorial of St. Bridget (1302-1373), patron saint of Sweden. She married a young prince and lived happily with him for 28 years, bearing him eight children. St. Catherine of Sweden was their daughter. After her husband died, Bridget founded the Order of the Most Holy Savior, erecting at Vadstena a double monastery for monks and nuns. Following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, she later went to Rome, where she worked for the return of the Popes from Avignon. She died of natural causes in 1373, at the age of seventy-one. This Scandinavian mystic is famous for her Revelations concerning the sufferings of our Redeemer.

This is the crucifix in the Basilica of St. Paul-outside-the-walls in Rome before which St. Bridget of Sweden prayed when she received the revelation of the 15 prayers honoring the wound of Jesus. To commemorate St. Bridget's vision, an inscription was put at that spot which reads "Pendentis pendente Dei verba accepit aure accipit et verbum corde Brigitta Deum. Anno Jubilei MCCCL." (Translation: "Bridget not only receives the words of God hanging in the air, but takes the word of God into her heart. Jubilee Year 1350.")

Her church in Rome is one of the smallest and loveliest jewels of the city and still a very active convent.

Human: The birthday of Monica Kirk Carman, my big sister!

Today, the ancient Romans celebrated a feast in honor of Neptune, the god of the seas – so-called Neptunalia.
