A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

Portrait of a water lily: a beauty captured in full bloom on her last day of life. I found this flower floating by the shore at our neighbor's property this morning when Cordelia went over to see the walleye their grandkids had caught. Since trading farm and forest for a waterfront property, I've been intrigued by the very different ecosystem of the latter. While some flora and fauna remain the same (the distance between the two properties is only 5 miles), the beautiful waterlilies and waterfowl (we now have loons on the lake), are unique to this location as they are, naturally, dependent upon water for life.

If you have a Lily in your life (we have a few!), here are some fun facts and more you can share with her about her "name flower".

The 88 day life cycle of a water lily time lapse.

Claude Monet's famous water lilies. Monet actually planted these water lilies and cultivated the lovely garden that was the subject of so many of his paintings, a garden you can still stroll through today! Or, a little closer to home, here is a recreation in Muskegon, Michigan!

Water lilies always remind me of floating Ophelia in this haunting Pre-Raphaelite painting.

"Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners."

Bishop Barron's Gospel reflections today.

Sanctoral: Anthony Mary Zaccaria (1502-1539), who was the founder of the Clerks Regular of St. Paul, later called the Barnabites from the name of their principal church in Rome. He also founded a congregation of nuns, the Angelic Sisters of Saint Paul. Here is an audio of his story.

Human:

3 BC– Augustus returned from Gaul to Rome.

68 AD – Salonina Matidia, daughter of Ulpia Marciana, sister of emperor Trajan and praetor Gaius Salonius Matidius Patruinus was born. After her father’s death in 78 AD mother and daughter were under the protection of Trajan and his wife, Plotina. Salonina often traveled with her uncle and helped him make decisions when he became the emperor. Like her mother, she had dedicated a series of inscriptions and monuments throughout the Empire. In 112 AD she received the title of Augusta. When Trajan died in 117 AD, his wife along with Salonine brought the ruler’s ashes to Rome.

The Writer's Almanac today.

Italian Word of the Day: Colibrì (hummingbird)

Quote:

The Lily

"The modest Rose puts forth a thorn:

The humble sheep, a threat'ning horn:

While the Lily white, shall in Love delight,

Nor a thorn nor a threat stain her beauty bright."
