A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

Just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water.... For those of you who were unfortunate enough to have seen the movie Jaws as a child, you know the reference, and the subsequent life-long fear of the dark ocean depths. Here in Michigan, we brag about our shark-free waters with t-shirts that say "The Great Lakes: No Salt, No Sharks, No Problem"! However, as Paddle-to-the- Sea explains (see below), the Great Lakes are connected to the Atlantic ocean, and all the waterways of the entire world. Which means, you never know what might slither through and somehow thrive in a new habitat, such as these creatures. But fear not, so far in Michigan there have not been any sightings of the most treacherous sea creature of them all, the carniverous mermaid, save the sweet one pictured above.

Liturgical: Monday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil."

Sanctoral: St. Hervé, Abbot (RM); St. Avitus (RM); St. Albert Chmielowski, Religious (Poland)

Human: 362 AD – the Roman emperor Julian the Apostate issued an edict forbidding Christians to teach at schools; 386 AD – Bishop Ambrose consecrated a church, which is today called Basilica Ambrosiana (as it contains the tomb of St. Ambrose), in the place where – as it was revealed to him in his dream – he discovered the remains of the martyrs Gervasius and Protasius.

Natural: Lake Michigan, the only one of the Great Lakes completely within the United States, has 1, 600 miles of beach. Here are 37 selected for being family-friendly.

Italian Word of the Day: The Four Seasons (Le quattro stagioni)

A Book I Browsed Today: Paddle to the Sea by Holling C. Holling. This book is a wonderful introduction to the five Great Lakes and how they interconnect and lead to the Atlantic ocean. The author, with the amusing name, wrote several other incredibly informative and interesting illustrated books for children, that are advanced enough to teach adults much history, geography, and culture as well.
