Calendar Class of June 22, 2024

A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

Today we are hosting the minor feast of June, also called the Festa Junina in Brazil. Many years ago I found this sun/moon cake mold, perfect for our Four Season Schole monthly and seasonal feasts, as the months are based on the rotation of the moon around the earth and the seasons are created by the earth's rotation of the sun. Valentina is the talented baker of this pretty "moon cake".

Liturgical: Saturday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

"But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil."

Bishop Barron's Gospel reflections today.

Sanctoral: Opt Mem of Sts John Fisher, Bishop, and Thomas More, Martyrs; Opt Mem of St. Paulinus of Nola, Bishop.

Lots of Thomas More College students are posting on social media today to celebrate their patron saint. Here is some more material to get to know this historic hero: a bio, a classic movie here, and some beautiful portraits here.

Human: Harry Houdini (from Budapest, Hungary) married Wilhelmina Beatrice “Bess” Rahner– 1894; 168 BC – in the battle of Pydna, the Roman armies, commanded by Lucius Aemilius Paulus Macedonicus, destroyed the Macedonian army of Perseus of Macedon in one hour. The Romans killed about 20,000 Macedonians with relatively small number of troops (about 1000 legionaries). Roman troops won the battle as well as the entire war – the third in a row. The result of the battle of Pydna was the subordination of Macedonia to Rome.; 431 AD – the Council of Ephesus began. It was the third general council convened in Ephesus by the emperor Theodosius II in order to end the dispute raised by Nestorius regarding the understanding of the person of Jesus and the title of Mary.

Natural: Last night's full strawberry moon eluded us for over an hour after it was set to rise, so we gave up and went inside, assuming the clouds were going to ruin the historic event. But when we were at a higher elevation, the pink-orange moon suddenly appeared, hugging the horizon (it is so low this year that countries in the far north, such as Iceland, may not even see the moon this month). I ran back down to the water and went out on my paddle board to soak up the moment, rowing out into the dark, straight into several geese families silently drifting along in a long, straight line. In the darkness I couldn't make out their reaction to my sudden intrusion into their swimming lesson, but they quickly left me alone to enjoy the beautiful moonrise from the middle of the water.

Italian Word of the Day: The Most Important Italian Driving Vocabulary

Quote: "In Platonic-Christian thought, man is in a necessary relationship with God and in a contingent relationship with society. . . . For Marxist atheism, the relationship with society becomes necessary and constitutive. Therefore in Marxism the Christian subordination of politics to ethics must be replaced by the absorption of ethics into politics." --Augusto Del Noce
