A Carpe Diem Snapshot:
I chose this photo today to remind myself of one of my top goals for this summer- to first read and review the book in the quote section below, and then to read aloud all our most favorite storybooks in the house, while the girls are still young enough to be drawn in by the spell of a good book. We may even create a few ourselves...
Liturgical: Tuesday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time
Therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned,
be on your guard not to be led into the error of the unprincipled
and to fall from your own stability.
But grow in grace
and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
Sanctoral: Francis of Caracciolo, Italy (1563-1608), another patron saint of cooks; Mary Elizabeth Hesselblad, Sweden, then the U.S., then Rome (1870-1957). Refounder of the Order of the Most Holy Saviour of St Bridget, whose church is one of my favorites in Rome.
Human: Tiananmen Square massacre– 1989
Natural: National Cheese Day-- Benedictine monks invented Muenster cheese in the 12th century, if you like that. If I had to choose just one, my favorite would be gorgonzola, or stilton, but I really am smitten by all sorts of real cheese, which reminds me of the first (and probably only) time I had a proper tasting at a real cheesemonger: I.J. Mellis and Son in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Italian Word of the Day: Spinta (push / incentive)
Quote: “But if we pay heed to the ancient sources, we will recognize that the virtues are related to a much thicker and deeper moral reality. We will see the virtues as the qualities of character that we need in order to steer our way through the complicated and mysterious sea of morality into which we all have been placed. For such journeying a pocketful of values is neither sufficient ballast nor a substitute for sails, compass, or sextant.”
