A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

The Sacred Heart of Jesus, aflame with burning love, has long been a favorite source of inspiration for Catholic artists, and Valentina is no exception. She has been painting images of the Sacred Heart ever since she attended kindergarten in a school of the same name. This is her latest, created this morning, and now proudly displayed on the refrigerator.

Liturgical: Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

For this reason I kneel before the Father,

from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,

that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory

to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self,

and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;

that you, rooted and grounded in love,

may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones

what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge,

so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Sanctoral: St. Willibald, +786

Bishop and missionary. A native of Wessex, England, he was the brother of Sts. Winebald and Walburga and was related through his mother to the great St. Boniface

Human: The Vesta Asperit festival was celebrated in Ancient Rome. It was a festival devoted to the goddess of health, which began on June 7 and lasted until June 15. At that time, numerous celebrations took place in honor of Vesta Asperit, during which bakers and millers did not work and decorate their mills or mules with violets and other smaller flowers.

421 AD – the Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius II married Eudocia, daughter of Leontios – professor of rhetoric and philosophy in Athens. Aelia, brought up so far in the traditions of ancient culture, was baptized and got the name Eudocia. She was interested in literature and theology interests. Some of her poems have survived.

Natural: National Doughnut Day. It's not really surprising that the humble doughnut gets its very own day considering what a large role it plays in feast days around the world (Fat Tuesday, for example). I once read an interview with Dr. Atkins of the Atkins diet fame in which he proudly admitted to not having eaten a doughnut since 1964. I promptly gave up the Atkins diet.

Italian Word of the Day: Secco (dry)

Quote: In the Sacred Heart, every treasure of wisdom and knowledge is hidden. In that divine heart beats God’s infinite love for everyone and for each of us as individuals. – St. John Paul II (1920-2005), Homily for the Votive Mass of the Sacred Heart during his Apostolic Voyage to Canada (1984)
