Calendar Class of March 11, 2024

A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

The calm between the storms. This morning the sun was shining and the sky was blue, despite the forecast, so I decided it would be prudent to head to Villa Pamphilj right away to capture a Carpe Diem snapshot. The heavy rain (and hail!) had turned the paths into muddy messes and small pools, but the swan was as neatly groomed and serene as usual.

Liturgical: Monday of the Fourth Week of Lent Lo, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; The things of the past shall not be remembered

or come to mind. Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create...

Station Church: Santi Quattro Coronati

Sanctoral: Eulogius of Cordoba, Spain (d. 859). Wrote accounts of the lives of the saints and martyrs before becoming one himself after aiding a Moorish woman who converted.

Sophronius, Egypt and Jerusalem (d. 638). Monk, bishop, Patriarch of Jerusalem, poet, one of the Fathers of the Church.

Human: 222AD- the Praetorian guard murdered the depraved 18-year-old emperor Elagabalus and his mother, putting his cousin Alexander Severus on the throne.

1544- Birthday of Renaissance poet Tarquato Tasso, Kingdom of Naples. He died (and is buried) at the monastery of Sant' Onofrio, just next to St. Peter's Basilica, on his way to be crowned the poet laureate by Pope Clement VIII. His funeral was a state event attended by many dignitaries.

Natural: 1669- a deadly Mount Etna eruption in Sicily (still active!)

Quote: “All time is truly lost and gone

Which is not spent in serving love.”

-Torquato Tasso
