Calendar Class of May 10, 2024

A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

Today, my relatively intrepid mother and daughter accompanied me to the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas to hear Professor Russell Hittenger speak on "What is the University for? God, Universality, and the Universe."

"But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. On that day you will not question me about anything."

Sanctoral: Damien de Veuster (of Molokai), SS.CC. (1840-1889); John of Avila (1499-1569), Doctor of the Church, spiritual director of many saints-- Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Francis Borgia, Peter of Alcantara, etc.

Human: 70 AD- Roman Siege of Jerusalem during the Jewish war, ending with Titus' destruction of the city (commemorated in the Arch of Titus in the Roman Forum); 1872 AD- Victoria Woodhull nominated for the Presidency of the United States.

Natural: 1876- "Dreaming Iolanthe" butter sculpture exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, PA by Caroline Shawk Brooks. This innovative and impressive sculpture sparked a flurry of serious butter art.

Quote: "That’s what a university is for: the cultivation of the intellect, the very site of bonum commune, achieved through many sorts of intellectual relations and habits.  As Newman warns, this is not just knowing something, but knowing relations with a virtuous  habit of discernment and judgment."

-- Professor Russell Hittenger on May 10, 2024 at the Angelicum University in Rome, Italy
