A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

In honor of Mom's birthday today, here is a classic portrait of her from her recent Roman sojourn! Also, here are a few bits and pieces, as well as an interview and an article, on this "woman of words"!

Liturgical: Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church- Mater Ecclesiae (since 2018, an annual feast on the Monday following Pentecost)

"All these devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, together with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers."

N.B.: The podcast I listen to for daily readings, saint, quotes, etc.

Sanctoral: Memorial of St. Bernardine of Siena (1380-1444). First a hermit, then the superior general of the Franciscans, then an effective preacher, creator of the IHS insignia adopted by the Jesuits, promulgator of the Holy Name of Jesus devotion.

Human: Famous birthdays: Annette Yvonne Cecile Courtemanche Kirk (1940)!

Also: 1882 Sigrid Undset, Danish-born Norwegian writer (Kristin Lavransdatter, Nobel Prize for Literature 1928), born in Kalundborg, Denmark (d. 1949)

Here is a short homily by an Irish priest about Undset.

Natural: Baby goslings! Of all the wildlife we've enjoyed seeing again since our return, the tiny baby goslings swimming as fast as a speedboat take the cake. Here's a documentary on the life cycle of the Canadian goose, which has pretty much colonized our lake.

Quote: “Let Mary never be far from your lips and from your heart. Following her, you will never lose your way. Praying to her, you will never sink into despair. Contemplating her, you will never go wrong.”

-Saint Bernardine of Siena
