A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

When I was Valentina's age, I was the founder and president of "The Investigators of Strange Phenomena Club," whose mission was to research ghosts, Big Foot, UFOs, and the Loch Ness monster (my particular interest). Not on the list was mermaids, which my daughters have now adopted as their field of study. In this particular book, Sea Tale, a sailor makes a bargain with a witch that compromises the freedom of his new mermaid love. Fortunately, he outwits her, and the story ends happily. "Real" mermaids, the girls inform me, are rather gruesome creatures sailors would do well to steer clear of. Here's some of the "evidence", and the inevitable debunking video. But don't get too comfortable in the water this summer, because even if you don't bump into a scary mermaid, you might swim into one of these.

Liturgical: Friday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time; Ember Friday

"Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing before the gates. Take as an example of hardship and patience, brothers and sisters, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Indeed we call blessed those who have persevered."

Quote: “When force of circumstance upsets your equanimity, lose no time in recovering your self-control, and do not remain out of tune longer than you can help. Habitual recurrence to the harmony will increase your mastery of it.”

– Marcus Aurelius
