A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

Whenever I need to remind myself of why I am living in a city, and not the country, I take a walk up to the summit of the Janiculum hill, the Piazzale Garibaldi. From here, you can take in a sweeping panoramic view of the Roman cityscape that should be enough to convince anyone that "there's no place like Rome."

In order to reach this inspiring vantage point, however, one must courageously walk about seven minutes against rush hour traffic at sunset without a sidewalk. Three roads converge at one historic spot, the Piazzale Aurelio/Porta San Pancrazio, pictured above. As I passed by this evening on my way to the view, I got to be a witness to one of the largest frustrations of city dwellers-- traffic "incidents" (the two cars bumper to bumper in the photo).

Fortunately no one was hurt, except for some egos, but you'd never guess that by the rancor being raised with increasing volume as I headed towards the view with the words "There's no place like Rome" running on repeat in my mind.

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away."
