A Carpe Diem Snapshot:
Today, this first morning of the first of October, was appropriately autumnal with gloomy, grey skies and drizzle over a steel gray lake. Yesterday, however, I captured this brilliant blue sky as the backdrop to one of the most colorful trees on my Mom's property of Piety Hill. I was hoping we could get a glimpse of the colors that will be bursting over the next two weeks before the branches become barren until we return again in the Spring. Piety Hill is a very autumnal house with its orange-red bricks and orange entrance hall. It's the reason, no doubt, that burnt orange is one of my favorite colors, also because of the abundant orange foliage on display this month, my birthday month.
Liturgical: Readings for the Memorial of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church
For my soul is surfeited with troubles
and my life draws near to the nether world.
I am numbered with those who go down into the pit;
I am a man without strength.
R. Let my prayer come before you, Lord.
Bishop Barron's Gospel reflections today.
Sanctoral: Today is the Memorial of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face (1873-1897), more popularly known as "the Little Flower." Although just an obscure cloistered Carmelite nun, she has had universal appeal since her death in 1897. St. Thérèse is the patroness of all foreign missions and patroness of France, and declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope St. John Paul II in 1997.
Everyone loves the "Little Flower"! Here is some special content to celebrate her feast day.
Human: Welcome, October! This month is packed full of history and family birthdays. It is also "Kirktober"- a month to learn about and celebrate the legacy of Russell Amos Agustine Kirk, whose birthday was October 19.
Natural: October means cider and doughnuts and all things pumpkin. Here are some mouth-watering Fall recipe ideas from Old Farmer's Almanac.
Italian: Purtroppo (unfortunately)
Quote: “God gives me courage in proportion to my sufferings. I feel at this moment I couldn’t suffer any more, but I’m not afraid, since if they increase, He will increase my courage at the same time.” --St. Therese
