A Carpe Diem Snapshot:
"Non so chi ha creato il mondo, ma so che era innamorato." The Janiculum hill is known to inspire amateur poets, who share their verses with the world through the "artistic" medium of graffiti. This poetic contribution to the Terrazzo di Roma caused me to stop and consider its proposal this morning. "I don't know who created the world, but I know that he was in love," is the translation. When gazing out over the vista of the Eternal City, I see the poet's point. But, of course, man made this city... perhaps the reason why we find it so beautiful is because this cityscape of chiming bell towers and church domes was made by men who were in love with God.

Sanctoral: Today is the Optional Memorial of St. John XXIII (1881-1963), pope from 1958-1963, best known for convening the Second Vatican Council. He was beatified by Pope St. John Paul II on September 3, 2000. His feast is assigned to the day on which the first session of Vatican II opened in 1962. On May 29, 2014, Pope Francis ordered the inscription of Saint John XXIII, Pope, into the General Roman Calendar.

Human: Yom Kippur Begins
Yom Kippur begins at sunset on this day. This “Day of Atonement” is a very solemn day in the Jewish year that is devoted to fasting, prayer, and repentance. On Yom Kippur, people repeat a chant called the “Al Chet” (Chet is usually translated as “sin”). In the chant, the people list the ways in which they have fallen short over the past year and repent of these shortcomings. Learn more about Yom Kippur.

"Solo per Oggi" ("Only for Today") by Pope John XXIII. I say this nearly every morning:
Solo per oggi, cercherò di vivere alla giornata (in senso positivo), senza voler risolvere il problema della mia vita tutto in una volta.
Solo per oggi, avrò la massima cura del mio aspetto: vestirò con sobrietà; non alzerò la voce; sarò cortese nei modi; non criticherò nessuno; non pretenderò di migliorare o disciplinare nessuno tranne me stesso.
Solo per oggi, sarò felice nella certezza che sono stato creato per essere felice non solo nell'altro mondo, ma anche in questo.
