A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

I captured this classic Roman scene at the Santo Spirito bar this morning. These ancient Italian religious sisters are too swiftly becoming a scene on a vintage postcard. Not only are Italian vocations very low, but so is the Italian birth rate in general. The little women that once ran schools, hospitals, charities, and more are vanishing. Visitors to Rome are often struck at the sight of these intrepid urban sisters as they drive by in large vans or navigate the busy street with cell phone to ear. The sight of this sister sipping a well-deserved cappuccino was like seeing a "Bentornato a Roma" sign.

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.

There is need of only one thing.

Mary has chosen the better part

and it will not be taken from her.”

Bishop Barron's Gospel reflections today.

Sanctoral: Saint John Leonardi, Italy +1609. A friend, and cat-sitter, of St. Philip Neri.

Human: 28 BC – the magnificent temple of Apollo on the Palatine Hill was dedicated, to which the Sibylline books were transferred. A library called the Palatinate was created next to the temple.

451 AD – the Council of Chalcedon began. Nearly 600 bishops from the eastern part of the Empire took part in it. The West was represented by the two legates of Leon I. It was the biggest council of the ancient times. The Council agreed on the existence of two natures in Christ, divine and human, with the belief that at the same time He is one Person – a personal union. In addition, the council announced 30 canons on disciplinary matters, among others, he proclaimed Jerusalem the fifth patriarchate.
