A Carpe Diem Snapshot:
Witnessing any sunrise is a Carpe Diem moment, but it's especially magical when it rises over the ocean. So long, Atlantic!
Liturgical: Readings for the Memorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest
Jesus said to the crowd: “No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away.”
Bishop Barron's Gospel reflections today.
Sanctoral: Today is the Memorial of St. Pius of Pietrelcina (1887-1968), more popularly known as Padre Pio was born in 1887 in the small Italian village of Pietrelcina. He joined the Capuchin Friars at the age of sixteen and was ordained a priest seven years later. For fifty years at the monastery of San Giovanni Rotundo he was a much sought after spiritual advisor, confessor, and intercessor whose life was devoted to the Eucharist and prayer. Yet despite such notoriety, he would often say, "I only want to be a poor friar who prays."

Natural: Today we explored the port of Norfolk, Virginia before heading to the airport, and saw an immense ship of war, the USS Wisconsin, the largest battleship ever built by the U.S. Navy, which is part of the Nauticus Maritime Discovery Center. A few hours later I learned that the aircraft carrier USS Truman, two destroyers and a cruiser left Norfolk just this morning for the Middle East on a scheduled deployment. It will take them two weeks to cross the Atlantic before they enter the Mediterranean.
