A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

Carpe Canis! Today's surprise arrived at the dentist's office when this extremely loving dog, Sadie, greeted us as if we were her long-lost best friends. The overwhelming affection that good-natured dogs shower upon almost anyone who crosses their paths makes a convincing case for dogs being the best pets. And yet, as soon as we even begin turn our heads away, these attention-seekers whine in protest as if we had just broken their hearts. Too much emotional drama, in my opinion! Of course, it could just be that I was born with a "cat owner" personality. Which are you? See the natural cycle lesson below to find out.

Liturgical: Readings for the Memorial of Saint Peter Claver, priest

"Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough? Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become a fresh batch of dough, inasmuch as you are unleavened.

For our Paschal Lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. Therefore, let us celebrate the feast, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." 1 COR 5:1-8

Bishop Barron's Gospel reflections today.

Sanctoral: Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Peter Claver (1581-1654), who was born of a distinguished family in Catalonia, Spain. He became a Jesuit in 1604, and left for Colombia in 1610, dedicating himself to the service of black slaves. For thirty-three years he ministered to slaves, caring for the sick and dying, and instructing the slaves through catechists. Through his efforts three hundred thousand souls entered the Church. He is the Patron of the African Missions, proclaimed in 1896 by Pope Leo XIII.

Human: Mary Stuart, at nine months old, is crowned "Queen of Scots" in the central Scottish town of Stirling-- 1543; Continental Congress declared “United States of America” would be the name of the new nation (from the United Colonies)– 1776; 2015 Queen Elizabeth II becomes Great Britain's longest-reigning monarch at 63 years and seven months, beating the previous record set by her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria.

It's the birthday of novelist Leo Tolstoy, born into nobility near Tula, Russia (1828).

The Writer's Almanac edition today.

Natural: Do you prefer cats or dogs as pets? Apparently, your choice says something about your personality!

Italian: Impacchettare (to wrap)

Quote: “Only people who are capable of loving strongly can also suffer great sorrow, but this same necessity of loving serves to counteract their grief and heals them.” ― Leo Tolstoy
